The Sinhala movie Father is a historical drama inspired by true events in Sri Lanka between the 1970s and 1990s, focusing on a young man’s quest for justice amid a backdrop of political violence.
The narrative centers on Desmond Gunasekara (Poojana Dandeniya), a religious young man from Gampaha. His life takes a drastic turn after an accidental conflict with Gnane (Jagath Manuwarna), the leader of a powerful local criminal gang. Set during the politically turbulent period of the 1988-89 insurrections, the story explores Desmond’s journey as his loved ones fall victim to a cycle of state-sponsored violence and criminal activity, culminating in his pursuit of retribution.
